Hollyoaks
Hollyoaks is one of the most popular and newest soaps in the UK. It represents channel 4 in the soap genre as its flagship and from shaky beginnings has cemented itself as a favourite in the 14-25 year old demographic.
Devised by Phil Redmond in 1995, the show wasn’t an instant success like some of its more established soap opera rivals. What immediately made Hollyoaks distinct from other soap operas was the very young cast. There were no central characters who were any older than 30 and as such, the show didn’t aim to target the entire nation, but just the younger generation.
The show is now well established as one of channel 4’s most reliable brands and sits just under its main soap opera rivals. Almost as popular as the show itself are the calendars, ‘Hollyoaks Hunks’ and ‘Hollyoaks Babes’, which sell a lot of copies every year. This success is perhaps a reflection on another departure that the show took from the pathway of its more conventional rival shows – that being, its propensity towards the use of very young and attractive cast members, almost across the board.
In this respect, the show is more like an American serial, with all of the unrealistic beauty ideals packed into the members of one town, which is supposed to be Chester. Beautiful actors that have made a name for themselves in the show include James Redmond, Will Mellor, Gemma Atkinson, Jeremy Edwards , Terri Dwyer , Ali Bastian , Gary Lucy and Elize Du Toit.
Much of the filming is conducted in Liverpool instead of Chester itself and is undertaken by a company called Lime Pictures. Much of the camera work is done in studios rather that on location.
Like many other soaps the show has addressed some heavy-weight issues. Examples of this include carbon monoxide poisoning, living with epilepsy, heroin abuse, male rape, sexuality, child abuse, anorexia, bulimia, pupil/teacher relationships, self harm, murder, homelessness, cot death and racism. In many ways the show is very unrealistic and presents a rather fuzzy and rose tinted view of life. These heavy themes lace the show’s more traditional storylines that speak to teenage angst, romance and general bickering.

In Digital Spy’s first ever Soap Awards, Hollyoaks has managed to bag five of the fourteen awards, beaten only by that BBC soap, EastEnders which, for some reason, won seven.
